About Wrestling
Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in the history of mankind. We can learn about the history of the sport, which dates back 15,000 years, from various sculptures, reliefs and cave drawings. Some of the wrestling techniques depicted are also used in modern wrestling competitions. Wrestling has been one of the main sports of the Olympic Games since its inception. Matches are organized in two different disciplines as unique events.
Greco-Roman wrestling and the modern format of freestyle wrestling.
Wrestling Rules
Olympic wrestling has two different disciplines with their own rules. In Greco-Roman wrestling, athletes can only use their arms and upper body to attack their opponents from the waist up. Freestyle wrestling has much more open rules. Athletes can use their feet as well as their arms and can attack their opponents from the waist up or down.
Although the rules are different, the goal is the same in both disciplines. In 2-3 minute periods inside the circular area, wrestlers try to touch their opponents' shoulders to the ground with their bare hands. If no one's shoulders have touched the ground at the end of the period, the wrestler with the most points on the points awarded by the referees is the winner.
Olympic History of Wrestling
Greco-Roman wrestling has been an essential Olympic event since the first modern Games in Athens in 1896 and became a permanent part of the Olympic program in 1908. Freestyle wrestling made its debut a few years later at the 1904 Games in St. Louis and has been a permanent part of the Olympic program since the 1920 Games in Antwerp. Women's freestyle wrestling has also been part of the Olympic program since the Athens 2004 Games.
Athletes representing the Soviet Union won 116 medals at the Games, including 62 gold medals, making them the most successful nation in wrestling history. Team USA athletes are in second place with 142 medals, 57 of them gold. Japan was the most successful nation in women's wrestling, winning 15 of the 24 gold medals.
