Olympic History of Volleyball
Volleyball was first included in the Olympics in Tokyo 1964. The men's and women's competitions were organized as a single group, with all teams playing each other once. Later, at the 1972 Munich Olympics, group stages, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals were added.
In the 1980s, teams from the Soviet Union and Cuba regularly made the Olympic podium, followed by Italy and the People's Republic of China in the 1990s. They were followed by Brazil in the 2000s. The former Soviet Union, Brazil and the United States of America are the most medal-winning teams in volleyball at the Olympics.
Briefly Volleyball Rules
Volleyball is a sport played by two teams of 6 players each on an indoor court 18 meters long and 9 meters wide. Matches are played over 5 sets and points are awarded when the ball touches the ground or makes a handling error within the court boundaries. The first team to reach 25 points by at least two points wins the set. If there is a tie after 4 sets, a 5th set of 15 points is played.
Tournament Format
Compared to the previous Olympic Games, the format has changed slightly. This time there will be 3 groups of 4 teams, with the top two teams from each of the 3 groups advancing to the quarterfinals. Out of these 6 teams that advance to the quarterfinals, the two teams with the highest ranking in the ranking system will advance to the quarterfinals. Volleyball competitions will continue in the quarterfinals and then in the elimination procedure.
